HSA is a plan for small businesses for providing health and dental benefits to their employees. We\u2019re fortunate to live in a country that pays for much of its citizens\u2019 healthcare costs. However, our system is far from perfect. There are many medical costs that we pay for out of pocket. Employers often believe that traditional group plans are their only option. That\u2019s where the Health Spending Account (HSA) comes in. Learn about the benefits of this account and if your business is eligible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 20px\"><strong>For Who is Health Spending Account?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Small\/big size business owners <\/li><li>To receive T4 income \/ Paying income tax <\/li><li>For paying medical bills<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to understand the basic concepts of tax planning. HSA may be different from your company rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 20px\"><strong>Who Are HSAs For?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HSAs are for small business owners who want to offer their employees <u><a href=\"https:\/\/milifeinsurance.ca\/health-dental-insurance\">health and dental insurance<\/a><\/u> benefits. This account allows them to pay for all their employees\u2019 health costs, with no taxes charged to the employee. Then, the business can deduct the amount they spent on employee healthcare from their gross business income. These costs become a business expense instead of a personal cost. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the business is incorporated, then the employer and\nall employees are eligible to use an HSA. Unincorporated businesses can also be\neligible if there\u2019s at least one employee under specific conditions.\nSelf-employed business owners and sole proprietors are not eligible for HSAs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 style=\"font-size: 20px\"><strong>The Benefits of Health Spending Account<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike group health plans, there are no annual limits or co-payments on some HSA services in Canada. Employees have the flexibility to spend their HSA credits however they wish. They could get prescriptions filled, glasses, braces, special treatments, and more. Employers don\u2019t have to address disgruntled employees who need services not covered in the group plan. And, employees with existing medical conditions don\u2019t have to worry about not getting coverage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers get more transparency in their costs. They know upfront how much they\u2019ll be spending on health benefits for the year. The business owner must decide the amount to fund each\nemployee each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When an employee uses a medical service not covered by\npublic healthcare, they pay out of pocket and request a receipt. That receipt\ngets submitted to the third-party insurer for validation. Once it\u2019s validated,\nthe employee receives a cheque that includes the full cost of the service as\nwell as any taxes paid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third part insurer will charge an administration\nand setup fee to the business owner.
